A light coating of frost is completely normal when operating in heating mode during cold weather. The system should periodically enter a 'defrost cycle' to melt this frost. However, if the outdoor unit turns into a solid block of ice that never melts, your defrost thermistor or reversing valve has failed and requires immediate repair.

If new batteries don't fix the issue, the infrared receiver board inside the indoor wall unit may have failed, or the remote itself is broken.
