Short cycling usually means the unit is oversized for the room, the thermostat sensor is reading incorrectly, or the air filter is completely clogged. When a unit short cycles, it cannot properly dehumidify the room and causes excessive wear and tear on the compressor.

Unlike central HVAC systems that use large disposable filters, mini splits use reusable mesh filters that must be cleaned every 2 to 4 weeks. Because mini split units rely on very precise, low-velocity airflow, even a thin layer of dust on the filter can severely restrict cooling performance and cause the coil to freeze.

A light coating of frost is completely normal when operating in heating mode during cold weather. The system should periodically enter a 'defrost cycle' to melt this frost. However, if the outdoor unit turns into a solid block of ice that never melts, your defrost thermistor or reversing valve has failed and requires immediate repair.
